Description
Not your everyday garden tree, but stunning in any garden setting. A wonderful foliage tree while young, going on to offer hanging flower panicles, followed by intriguing long bean pods upto 60cm (24in). Can grow to a large size or can be pruned annually to keep to size. Once established, prune in late spring each year to encourage large showy foliage. Height: 12m (468in). Spread: 8m (312in).

1 packet (20 catalpa seeds) (32504)

Sowing
Sow in trays, pots, etc of good seed compost, just covering the seed with compost or vermiculite. Sow at any time of year. Germination can be slow. After sowing, seal container in a polythene bag and leave at 60-65F (15-18C) for 2 weeks, then place in a refrigerator (not freezer) for 3-6 weeks. After this return to the recommended germination temperature. If germination does not occur in 6-10 weeks return to the fridge for a further 3-6 weeks. Examine regularly whilst in the fridge and remove immediately the seeds show signs of germinating.
More Info
Water Indian Bean Trees regularly until fully established. Unripe wood is prone to frost damage, particularly in young plants. During cold periods, protect plants from the heaviest frosts. Catalpa needs little pruning when grown as a free standing specimen tree. However it responds nicely to pruning and can be pollarded annually to create a large rounded shrub.
