Description
The statuesque, graceful stems of Black Bamboo will create a superb architectural focal point in your garden. It's arching green canes age to a lustrous glossy black by their third year, while the abundant slender leaves remain evergreen. Unlike many bamboos, Phyllostachys nigra is a non-invasive, clump forming species that tolerates our winters with a hardiness that belies its exotic looks. Black bamboo makes an elegant specimen plant for borders or large containers. Create an attractive, low maintenance screen for exotic gardens, or grow it as a leafy under storey in exotic woodlands. Height: 4m (13'). Spread: 3m (10').

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
When growing Phyllostachys nigra in large patio containers, choose a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Repot the plant, firming well into the new container, then water well and position in full sun or semi shade. Alternatively plant Black Bamboos directly into borders in any moist, free draining soil. Bamboos dislike poor, dry soils. If your soil is particularly free draining, improve it by adding plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost prior to planting. Choose a sheltered position that is protected from cold, drying winds.
More Info
Feed and water bamboo plants regularly, particularly when grown in containers. Repot into successively larger containers as plants increase in size. Once bamboo plants are established, thin out any weak, damaged or unwanted canes in spring, cutting them back to ground level, and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Mature bamboos can be divided in spring if clumps become congested.

Thompson & Morgan strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3
