Heucheras are an easy way to add eye-catching ground cover to your garden. Forming neat mounds of richly-coloured foliage, their striking leaves are often ruffled or have scalloped edges. Every summer, the plants send up sprays of tiny delicate flowers that are loved by bees and butterflies. Grow these popular perennials en masse in your garden, or add them to patio pots or hanging basket displays.

Heucheras, also known as coral bells, are grown primarily for their striking foliage. This ranges from the deep purple of ‘Plum Pudding’ and the almost black of ‘Obsidian’ to the vibrant ‘Lime Marmalade’ and beautifully patterned ‘Tapestry’. They are happiest in part-shade, making them a useful plant for filling gaps in a border or as a beautiful container plant.
One of the best choices for autumn colour is Heuchera ‘Caramel’, whose leaves start off a dull red and slowly transform into copper and gold as they age.
Heucheras prefer soil that’s not too wet or too dry, but ‘Chocolate Ruffles’ and ‘Lime Marmalade’ are both more tolerant of drought than most varieties.
One of the largest and fastest growing varieties is Heuchera ‘Wild Rose’, a large-leaved plant that quickly reaches a height and spread of 50cm. Its rosy-purple foliage looks especially good next to yellow grasses like Carex ‘Everillo’.
