Beautiful, scented pendants of lilac-blue flowers drape from the branches of this quintessential cottage garden climber, filling the air with an intoxicating perfume. This unusual American dwarf species is less vigorous than other wisteria varieties, reaching a mature height of 5m (16’). Its compact growth and prolific flowering habit make Wisteria ‘Amethyst Falls’ an ideal specimen plant for large containers and sunny walls. Height: 5m (16’). Spread: 3m (9’).
Culinary note: The flowers are the only edible part of the plant and can be made into an aromatic wine. Their flavour is perfumed. Caution: All other parts of wisteria are poisonous. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Grow wisteria plants in a sunny or semi shaded site in any moist, well drained soil. Wisteria flower buds can be damaged by hard spring frosts so choose a sheltered position. Prior to planting add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil. Provide the twining stems with an appropriate and sturdy support, such as strong trellis or wires attached to walls and pergolas.
More Info Feed and water regularly until fully established. In autumn or spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Prune wisteria in July and again in February. During the first two years, prune wisteria to create a framework of permanent stems. Tie in selected lateral shoots to sturdy supports and cut back unwanted growth. Once the desired framework has been created, continue pruning wisteria twice a year to contain the plants growth within its allotted space.
