Companion planting: Try growing swede with Nasturtiums to draw cabbage white butterflies away from your crop, and mint to help deter flea beetles.

Sowing Months Harvest Months

Water swede regularly, particularly during dry periods to prevent skins from splitting. Hoe between rows to reduce weed growth. Swedes require a long growing season and will not mature until the autumn. Harvest swede from October to December, lifting individual swede as and when required. At the end of the year, any remaining roots should be lifted to prevent them becoming woody and stored in damp peat for winter use.

Direct sow swede seeds outdoors from May to June. Grow Swedes in a weed free, sunny position in non-alkaline, light, fertile, well drained soil that has been raked to a fine tilth. Sow swede seeds thinly at a depth of 1cm (1/2") in drills 30cm (12") apart. Germination will usually take 7-10 days. When large enough to handle, thin out the seedlings within each row to 23cm (9") apart.

Rapid growers 2016-11-14

I've not had much success growing swede in the past so tried these and grew one 20 ft row. I started them off in modules and planted them out during mid-July. The plants grew rapidly in the garden, despite the weather sometimes hot and dry. By October some had reached 4 to 5 inch diameter, perfect for me. However, a few had hardly swollen stems at all. This could possibly be an inconsistency in nutrients but I think this unlikely. They certainly don't look as even in size as shown in the picture. However, I still have plenty to eat and they have a tasty pale flesh.

T&M replied on 2016-11-03: Thank you for your lovely review. I am very glad that overall you were pleased with your purchase. I think the weather conditions contributed to the problems with the size and shape of your crop. I hope that we can continue to be of service to you during the years to come.
