Description

Skimmia japonica 'Marlot' is a delightful compact evergreen shrub that brings a touch of elegance to shaded areas of the garden. Its glossy, dark green leaves create a lush, bushy appearance, making it an attractive choice for those looking to enhance their outdoor spaces. This shrub is particularly appreciated for its ability to thrive in low-light conditions, providing a vibrant backdrop even in the dimmest corners of the garden. The foliage not only adds visual interest but also serves as a perfect canvas for the stunning flowers and berries that follow.

In spring, 'Marlot' showcases clusters of creamy-white, fragrant flowers that are not only a feast for the eyes but also a magnet for pollinators such as bees and butterflies. This floral display is a significant highlight of the season, contributing to the overall biodiversity of the garden. As the seasons change, the female plants produce striking bright red berries in autumn and winter, provided they have been pollinated. These berries not only add a pop of color during the colder months but also serve as a food source for birds, enhancing the ecological value of your garden.

This resilient shrub thrives best in partial to full shade and prefers sheltered locations, particularly in cooler climates where it can withstand typical winter temperatures across the UK. It flourishes in moist, well-drained soil that ranges from acidic to neutral, making it adaptable to various garden conditions. 'Marlot' is also tolerant of urban environments, making it an excellent choice for shaded borders, woodland gardens, or even container planting. With its low maintenance requirements and year-round ornamental appeal, Skimmia japonica 'Marlot' is a fantastic addition to any garden, providing beauty and interest throughout the seasons. Height: 60 cm (24 in) Spread: 60 cm (24 in).

How to Grow
Grow Skimmia plants in a dappled or fully shaded position, in moderately fertile, rich, well drained soil which can be neutral to acidic in pH. Avoid full sun, as this can cause yellowing of the leaves. Alternatively grow Skimmia in large containers, using a soil based compost mixed with ericaceous (acidic) compost.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Skimmia plants will require very little pruning. After flowering, trim them lightly to keep a good shape, and remove any dead or damaged growth.
