Description

Salvia pratensis, commonly known as Meadow Clary, is a captivating perennial wildflower that graces the landscapes of Europe with its presence. Renowned for its tall, graceful spikes adorned with vibrant blue to violet flowers, this plant is a cherished addition to naturalistic and cottage-style gardens. Its extended flowering season, which spans from late spring to mid-summer, not only enhances the visual appeal of any garden but also attracts a myriad of pollinators, making it a vital component of eco-friendly gardening practices.

The growth habit of Meadow Clary is characterized by its upright, clump-forming structure, which allows it to stand out in any floral arrangement. The foliage consists of basal rosettes of hairy, grey-green leaves that release a delightful aroma when crushed, adding an olfactory dimension to its charm. The flowers themselves are tubular and exhibit a striking deep blue to violet hue, featuring two-lipped corollas that create a stunning visual display. This deciduous perennial thrives in full sun and flourishes best in well-drained, moderately fertile soil, demonstrating a remarkable tolerance for dry conditions once established.

Meadow Clary reaches an ultimate height of approximately 60 cm (24 inches) and spreads to about 45 cm (18 inches), making it an ideal choice for wildflower meadows, naturalistic borders, and pollinator gardens. Its ability to attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects underscores its importance in supporting local wildlife. Fully hardy in the UK, this exquisite plant not only enhances the beauty of outdoor spaces but also contributes to the ecological balance, making it a luxurious yet practical choice for discerning gardeners.

How to Grow

Your bare roots should be planted at the earliest opportunity following delivery. In cold weather, plant your salvia bare roots into pots and grow on in a cold greenhouse or sheltered, frost-free position outdoors until growth has commenced in late spring. Plants can then be set out in their final planting positions. Choose a site in full sun in moist but freely draining soil. Drought tolerant once established. Plants are hardy down to -10C but will not appreciate being wet over winter.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.
