Exceptional Redcurrant ‘Jonkheer van Tets’ is a satisfyingly heavy-cropping variety to grow, producing impressive yields of large berries with a lovely sweet flavour and wonderful bursting texture. This RHS AGM variety is popular for its rewarding and reliable nature, providing plenty of versatile fruit to harvest from early summer which can be enjoyed fresh or made into delicious jams, jellies and puddings. Currants are low-maintenance upright shrubs, perfect for adding structure to mixed beds and borders, as well as for growing in kitchen gardens or allotments. Height: 1.2m (4’). Spread: 1.2m (4’).
1 x 9cm potted ribes plant (KB0571)
Keep redcurrant plants well watered during dry periods, particularly as the fruits are developing. Netting the bushes will help to protect the currants from birds. Redcurrants can be harvested from July.
Redcurrants form fruit on 2 year old wood, so after planting the leading shoots need only be pruned by half to encourage branching. In subsequent years, reduce any new growth by half. Take care not to cut back into the previous year's wood unless removing the occasional weak or damaged stem to encourage healthy new shoots to develop. Culinary note: Redcurrants are delicious when eaten fresh or added to a colourful and tasty summer pudding. Suitable for freezing.
