This brilliant white Larkspur makes a dazzling feature in the border and a fabulous cut flower for bridal bouquets. The tall, ice-white spires are held on strong stems and shine out in the sun to make a dramatic statement in borders – especially when planted en masse. A cottage garden favourite, the flowers are a boon for wildlife, luring bees and butterflies. As well as being excellent for picking, the flowers can also be dried and turned into confetti. Height: 90-120cm (3-4ft). Spread: 40cm (16in).

Sowing

Sow April to May or September to October. Sow outdoors where they are to flower. Prepare the ground well and rake to a fine tilth before sowing. Sow 3mm (1/8in) deep, in rows 30cm (12in) apart. Alternatively, sow in late summer in 7.5cm (3in) pots in a cool greenhouse and then overwinter plants in cool, well lit conditions. Plant out the following spring after all risk of frost, 30cm (12in) apart in full sun.

When large enough to handle, thin out seedlings to 23cm (9in) apart.

Water regularly until larkspur plants become fully established. Place sturdy twiggy sticks among the seedlings while they are 10cm (4") high and allow the plants to grow through them for support. Alternatively stake plants with bamboo canes or similar while young. Remove spent larkspur flowers regularly to encourage further blooming. Caution: toxic if eaten.
