Description

Hydrangea ‘Groundbreaker Ruby’ rewrites the rules with a low, spreading form and a dazzling display of gradually evolving colour.

This revolutionary dwarf Hydrangea paniculata spreads to form a dense, low-growing carpet, quite unlike traditional upright varieties. From mid-summer, it produces an abundance of conical flower heads that open fresh white, then gradually deepen through soft pink to rich ruby red, creating a captivating, multi-tonal effect that lasts for around 100 days, from July to November. The slightly open flower structure invites pollinators, adding valuable biodiversity benefits alongside its strong visual impact.

Versatile and dependable, it requires minimal upkeep and no staking or shaping, while its spreading habit helps retain soil moisture and improve soil health. Ideal for borders, mass planting, or groundcover use, it suppresses weeds and creates a continuous carpet of colour, bringing long-lasting impact with minimal effort. Reaching only around 40cm in height, it’s also perfect for all size containers from window boxes to large hanging baskets making it great for small space gardening on patios, terraces and balconies. Hydrangea ‘Groundbreaker Ruby’ is easy to grow, adaptable, tolerant of heat and cold and highly disease resistant, offering a versatile, climate-resilient solution for modern gardens. Ultimate height: 40cm (16in). Ultimate spread: 70cm (27in).

How to Grow
Hydrangea paniculata prefers a sunny or semi-shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any non-alkaline, fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds swell in spring to protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune the old stems after flowering, leaving the new growth in situ, as this Hydrangea flowers on new growth unlike most others. If necessary, Hydrangea paniculata will tolerate hard pruning of the oldest stems to a few buds from ground level. This will also encourage larger flower heads to be produced. After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: All parts of hydrangea will upset the stomach if eaten. The foliage may also aggravate skin allergies.
Caution
