Description

Dahlia x hortensis ‘Lubega Dark Velvet’ is a stunning variety that stands out in any garden with its rich, velvety blooms that range from deep burgundy to nearly black. These large, fully double flowers not only serve as a striking focal point but also add a touch of elegance and drama to the landscape. The unique color and texture of the petals create a visual feast, making this dahlia a favorite among gardeners looking to make a bold statement in their floral displays.

Blooming from mid-summer until the first frosts of autumn, ‘Lubega Dark Velvet’ offers an extended period of beauty, ensuring that your garden remains vibrant and lively throughout the growing season. Its compact, upright growth habit is complemented by dark green foliage, which enhances the allure of the flowers. This variety thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter, making it essential to provide the right conditions for optimal growth. Regular watering during dry spells is crucial to keep the plants healthy and encourage abundant flowering.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, this dahlia variety is also beneficial for local wildlife, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. It is versatile enough to be used in garden borders, containers, or as cut flowers for indoor arrangements. For gardeners in colder regions of the UK, it is important to lift and store the tubers in a frost-free environment to prevent damage during winter. By deadheading spent blooms, you can promote continuous flowering, ensuring that your garden remains a source of joy and beauty throughout the season. Height: 80 cm (31 in) Spread: 50 cm (20 in)

More Info
Feed and water dahlias regularly throughout the growing season. While dahlia plants are still young, pinch out the growing tip of each stem to encourage bushier growth and masses of flowers. Deadhead faded dahlia flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. Bedding dahlia are generally grown as annuals, however dahlia tubers may be lifted in autumn and stored over winter in trays of peat or sand, in a cool but frost free position if required.
