Description

Clematis ‘Gladys Picard’ is a large early flowering clematis with blooms which exhibit a subtle variation in colour. The flowers are extra-large, measuring 15-20cm (6-8in) in diameter and ranging from pearly white to an exquisite pale mauve, accompanied by yellow stamens and wavy edged petals. The main flowering is from late spring to midsummer but correct pruning will also produce a second flush in late summer.

Pruning group 2. Maximum height and spread: 400cm (157in) x 250cm (98in).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3") below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.
More Info
Feed and water frequently throughout the growing season. This variety of clematis flowers in summer on new stems which develop from the previous year’s growth, they may also have a second flush of flowers in late summer on new growth. Pruning should be undertaken in late winter/spring before active growth begins. When pruning group 2 Clematis, remove any damaged or dead stems entirely before cutting back the remaining stems to a pair of healthy buds, retaining a strong framework of old wood. After the first flush of flowers prune back the flowered stems again to a healthy pair of buds. In spring, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant in order to protect the roots and conserve soil moisture.
