Description

Achillea ptarmica 'Peter Cottontail' is a remarkable variety of sneezewort yarrow, celebrated for its striking appearance and robust nature. This adaptable and visually appealing perennial enhances any garden with its delicate charm while also providing essential support to local pollinators. Blooming from early summer to autumn, it showcases clusters of small, ivory-white flowers that evoke the softness of baby's breath.

The plant features dark green, lance-shaped leaves that create a lush, low mound, and it is hardy enough to withstand temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F). Preferring moist yet well-drained soils, including chalk, loam, and sand, it flourishes in full sun to partial shade. Regular watering is crucial, particularly during dry spells, and deadheading spent blooms will extend its flowering season. To keep the plant vigorous, dividing clumps every 2–3 years is recommended.

This cultivar not only beautifies borders, cottage gardens, wildflower meadows, and prairie plantings but also attracts bees and butterflies, making it a fantastic choice for pollinator-friendly gardens. Additionally, its flowers are perfect for both fresh and dried arrangements, reaching a mature height of about 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) and a spread of 70–75 cm (28–30 inches).

How to Grow
Plant out Achillea plants into any well-drained soil in full sun. Achillea plants dislike wet ground, particularly during winter. Improve heavy soil conditions by adding coarse grit or sharp sand prior to planting.

More Info
Once established, Yarrow is reasonably drought tolerant and requires little maintenance. In summer, stake the tall flower stems with garden canes to prevent them drooping and leave faded flower heads intact at the end of summer to enjoy an attractive autumn seed head display. When the first frosts blacken the stems, cut them down to ground level. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of yarrow in spring. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes.
