Thompson & Morgan is delighted to work alongside the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to offer special seed collections to home gardeners. Kew Wildflower Seeds have been specially selected by The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
The stately spikes of Vipers Bugloss are not only suited to wildflower patches but will also look fabulous in borders. The bell-shaped flowers are of a particularly intense violet-blue with long, bright red stamens hanging from their mouths like serpent’s tongues. The buds are arranged on their stems like coiled snakes. These features, along with its speckled stems resembling snake skin, are what have given Vipers Bugloss its name, and it was traditionally used as a cure for snake bites. The flowers attract bees, hoverflies and other pollinators and on a sunny day they literally hum with insects.
A lover of dry sandy or chalky sites, Vipers Bugloss is a biennial which benefits from sowing in late summer or autumn. In its first year it will produce a rosette of hairy leaves followed by flowers the following year. The plant then dies but once it is introduced into the garden it will gently self-seed and colonise new areas if allowed to do so. Height: 75cm (30”). Spread: 50cm (20”).
These plants have hairy foliage which can cause skin irritation. Wear gloves when handling them. Ingesting any part of this plant can cause mild stomach upset.

How to sow wild flower seeds

1 Packet (75 Seeds) (60566)
Direct sow wildflower seeds outdoors where they are to grow in spring or autumn. Choose a position in full sun on well drained soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Sow seeds thinly, and rake lightly to cover the seed, or sow in at a depth of 1.5cm (&frac116;”) in drills spaced 30cm (12”) apart. Water the ground regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination usually takes 14-21 days. As seedlings germinate, carefully thin out any that are too close together with a trowel and replant elsewhere.
Caution: irritant to skin and eyes

Thompson & Morgan strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3
