Flowering Months

Viburnums are invaluable garden shrubs offering multiple seasons of interest with both beautiful form, flowers and foliage. Viburnum plicatum ‘Opening Day’ is a choice cultivar offering up masses of huge, pompom-like flowers in spring, 7.5cm (3”) across, that emerge with a greenish tinge and mature to snowy white. The white flowers are nicely set against deep green, corrugated foliage that turns a deep red in autumn. Compact and low maintenance, it makes a rewarding pot or border specimen or can be used as a foundation shrub and left to grow taller. Height:1.5-3m (5-10 ft). Spread:1.5m-2.5m (5-8 ft).

How to Grow

Grow Viburnum plants in a sunny or semi shaded position, in any moderately fertile, well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant Viburnum shrubs at the same depth as they were planted in their pots. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil.

Water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Viburnum requires little pruning. After flowering cut back stems to a healthy bud and reduce any stems that spoil the symmetry of the plant.
