An unusual Sarracenia species which produces both exotic pitchers and intriguing flowers. A cross between the White Pitcher and the Parrot Pitcher, Sarracenia ‘Wrigleyana’ forms slender green funnels which curl over into white hoods patterned with sinister, blood-red veins. Light shines through these window-like hoods, atttracting unsuspecting insects to plunge to their deaths in the soup of digestive juices contained within the base of each funnel. In spring and early summer, Sarracenia ‘Wrigleyana’ also bears strange flowers, aptly known as ‘blood cups’, due to their deep sanguine colour. Eventual height and spread: 25cm (10in).

Grow Sarracenia plants in a sunny position. During the summer months plants are best stood outside on the patio. After 2-3 years they will be big enough to catch insects! Carnivorous plants ‘catch’ their own food and therefore should never be given extra plant food.
Pitcher plants require a reliably moist soil. This is best achieved by regularly standing the pots in a tray of rainwater or distilled water. Avoid using tap water as this contains chlorine and other minerals which may damage the sensitive roots of Sarracenia plants. Allow pots to drain after watering as excessively wet soil may cause the plants to rot, particularly during cold weather.
During the colder months carnivorous plants should be brought into a frost free greenhouse, conservatory or cool, bright windowsill indoors where they will become dormant for the winter. Reduce watering during dormancy to maintain a moist but not waterlogged soil. During dormancy some pitchers may turn brown. These can be trimmed away in the spring when active growth resumes.
