Description

Here’s a poppy that will reign supreme in borders all summer! This is another fabulous variety from Thompson & Morgan’s own breeding. Poppy ‘Supreme’ boasts spectacular fully double flowers which are three times larger than those of other similar papaver rhoeas varieties, and its exquisite crinkly petals with picotee edging in pink, cherry and orange tones contrast beautifully with its white centre.

Growing to a final garden height of 75cm, Poppy ‘Supreme’ is long-flowering and multi-branching, making it ideal for direct sowing into borders and beds.

It took over 6 years for our breeding team to bring Poppy ‘Supreme’ to the market. Charles Valin, who heads up Thompson & Morgan’s plant breeding team, spotted some plants in a batch of double Shirley poppies that had extra-large flowers. Two generations of selection later, Charles’ team had managed to ‘fix’ a giant-flowered mixture in double picotee bicolours to create this fantastic new poppy.Height: 75cm (30"). Spread: 30cm (12").

Charles Valin says: "We discovered that Poppy ‘Supreme’ has a very robust constitution and blooms for twice as long as traditional poppies. The flowers are really big and yet they retain their elegance and are in perfect proportion to the overall plant size".

Sowing
Direct sow Poppy seeds outdoors where they are to grow in spring or autumn. Choose a position in full sun on fertile, well drained soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Sow seeds thinly, just below the soil surface. Water the ground regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination usually takes 7 - 14 days. When Poppy seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to 30cm (12") apart.

Caution: harmful if eaten

Water corn poppies regularly until fully established. Annual poppies self-seed freely. If seedlings are not wanted the following year then faded poppy flowers should be deadheaded.
