Description
  • Uniquely-coloured green peony variety
  • Lightly fragranced
  • Long-lasting perennial
  • Easy to grow
Here's a really unusual peony variety! The semi to fully double flowers of Peony 'Green Halo' are essentially white, but what is so extraordinary about them is that the white petals are effectively 'guarded' by green petals and there are also irregular green petals which appear within the flower. With a light green petal base further enhancing this unique and statuesque peony, it's no wonder that this variety is highly sought after.

Large and very imposing peony blooms will appear in late spring to early summer and with their delicate fragrance they'll enhance the garden with their colour and scent. An easy-to-grow perennial, peony plants are long-lived and their spectacular blooms look amazing in floral arrangements and bouquets.

Culinary note: The petals can be added to salads, or cooked slightly and sweetened for a treat. Peony water was also once considered a delicacy and the blooms can be floated in punches. For more details about edible flowers click here.

How to Grow
Grow peonies in a sunny or semi shaded position. They prefer a well drained, rich fertile soil. This is best achieved by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or compost to the soil prior to planting, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Plant herbaceous peonies at a depth of around 5cm (2") below the soil surface. Planting too deeply may delay flowering.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. The growth points of most bare root perennials should be set about an inch below the soil surface. New growth will appear in spring.

More Info
Water regularly until peony plants are fully established. Thereafter, herbaceous peonies require little maintenance and will grow happily for many years if left undisturbed. However, they will appreciate a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost applied around the base of the plant in spring. Plants may take several years to establish before they produce their spectacular peony flowers.
