Description

Passion flowers are vigorous but tender evergreen climbers grown for their uniquely elaborate and showy blooms. Offset by deep green, three-lobed leaves, the exotic flowers are followed by egg-sized orange fruits that provide spectacular colour and interest well into autumn. Vigorous and easy to grow, these subtropical climbers are always rewarding for their sheer flower power and make a gorgeous addition to a warm, sheltered wall or trellis, or a conservatory. Though frost hardy, in cold areas, passion flowers will benefit from winter protection or being moved indoors to a greenhouse or conservatory over winter.

Passiflora Collection contains the following varieties:

  • Passiflora caerulea – a vigorous, trouble-free variety whose large flowers comprise snow white petals crowned with an explosion of vivid purple-blue filaments and a protruding lime green and violet central reproductive structure. RHS AGM. Height: 10m (32ft). Spread: 2m (6ft).
  • Passiflora ‘Lavender Lady’ – exotic flowers in an unusual and striking shade of pale purple, with vivid blue-purple filaments surrounding a protruding lime green central structure. RHS AGM. Height: 4m (13ft). Spread: 1.5m (5ft).
  • Passiflora x violacea ‘Victoria’ – a vigorous variety with stunning violet-pink flowers that are larger than most other passion flowers. Height: 8m (26ft). Spread: 2m (6.5ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Plant Passion flower plants into any moist, well drained soil. Choose a sunny position that is protected from cold winds in winter. Prior to planting, add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil. When growing passion flower, be sure to provide the twining stems with an appropriate support such as trellis or wires attached to fences and pergolas.
More Info
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season. In autumn, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Pruning Passion flowers is best undertaken in spring. Prune out the oldest stems, and reduce the remaining stems to restrict their vigorous growth to the available space.
