Description
More often found in the garden, these vibrant painted nettles make great house plants too. With such a diversity of colours and patterns, they are perfect for cheering up a bright windowsill, or adding a lush, leafy feel to the conservatory. During the summer months they can even stand outside on the patio! Coleus are very easy to grow from seed, and make excellent filler plants for indoor displays. Height and spread: 45cm (18").

1 packet (150 seeds) (KB5900)

Sowing

Sow Coleus seed at any time of the year at 21-24°C (70-75°F) on the surface of a good quality seed compost and gently firm down. Keep soil damp but not wet. Do not exclude light. Use a heated propagator or seal in a polythene bag until after germination which usually takes 10-20 days. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 8cm (3"), and later into 15cm (6") pots when plants are well grown. Pinch out shoot tips to encourage bushier plants.

More Info
Feed and water Coleus plants regularly, particularly during hot, dry periods. Remove any developing flower spikes as they will weaken the plant and cause poor quality foliage. Coleus houseplants should be given full light and a warm position in the winter months. Reduce watering and keep the compost just moist to prevent rotting and fungal diseases developing. Pinch back plants in the spring as growth resumes.
