How to Grow
Video
A popular variety which has been awarded an RHS AGM for its excellent garden performance. Liquidambar styraciflua 'Lane Roberts' makes a fine specimen tree. It is at its best in autumn when the deciduous, maple-like foliage becomes a tapestry of crimson, scarlet, mahogany, and almost purple-black. This large, broadly spreading tree reveals a magnificent silhouette of branches in winter, with deeply fissured bark. Grow it as a ‘stand alone’ specimen in large gardens and woodland areas where it has space to reach its full potential. Height: 25m (80’). Spread: 12m (40’).

Plant Liquidambar trees into any moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or semi-shade. Although Liquidambar prefers a neutral to acid soil, it is lime-tolerant in chalky areas provided that it has sufficient depth of soil. For the best autumn colours, choose a position in full sun.
More Info Feed and water regularly until fully established. Liquidambar will require very little pruning, however, damaged or misplaced shoots may be pruned out in winter or early spring while the tree is dormant.
