Description

This small-leaved privet is an excellent substitute for box topiary, avoiding all the pitfalls of box blight and box moth caterpillar. Fast-growing, and readily branching, it tolerates regular clipping and can easily be trained into dense, topiary shapes. Semi-evergreen, Ligustrum delavayanum may lose some leaves in very cold winters but will quickly re-foliate in the spring.

These stylish, lollipop half-standards come with clear stems and make elegant focal points for framing architectural features such as doorways. Once established, Ligustrum delavayanum is relatively drought tolerant and so makes a good choice for larger patio pots. The small, glossy leaves are accompanied by white fragrant flowers in late summer followed by black berries in autumn, although regular trimming will reduce the production of flowers and fruit.

How to Grow
Grow Privet in any well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Plants will tolerate a wide range of soils, from sand to chalk and clay, and areas of pollution. If planting in the open ground, keep well watered during the first two years whilst the tree is becoming established and maintain a 1m diameter circle around the tree free of grass and weeds. If grown in containers, care should be taken to avoid the roots from freezing hard in winter by wrapping the pot in fleece or moving it to a sheltered position.
More Info
Trim standards in May and again in August. After pruning, mulch plants in borders with 5cm (2”) of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plants. For containerised plants, apply a slow-release fertiliser as per the manufacturer's instructions. Caution: harmful if eaten.
