The name says it all - this evergreen Japanese Holly makes the perfect hedge! Glossy, small leaves, a neat habit and year-round colour make this the ideal alternative to Box hedges, which in recent years have suffered badly from pests and diseases. This robust, hardy shrub withstands regular pruning and thrives on a wide range of sites and soils. Ilex crenata 'Green Hedge' reaches a manageable height, making a handsome screen and lending itself well to topiary. Height and spread: 150cm (59").

How to Grow

Plant Ilex in garden borders in any moist, well drained garden soil, in full sun or semi-shade.

Feed and water Ilex plants regularly until they are fully established. Prune Ilex trained as a formal hedge in summer, removing any damaged stems and trimming the remaining growth to shape. Free-standing, informal specimens require very little pruning at all.
