Hieracium aurantiacumOrange Hawkweed, Fox and Cubs

This gorgeous little wildflower is also known as Fox and Cubs, due to the way the flowers are clustered together with some of the blooms open whilst others below remain in bud. The flowers are a precious shade of coppery red which is unusual amongst herbaceous perennials.

Hieracium aurantiacum forms basal rosettes of hairy rounded leaves which increase by stolons to form spreading clumps. From summer to autumn, erect hairy stems are topped with small dandelion-like flowers in brilliant shades of russet orange. It can be grown in a wildflower patch, where its nectar-rich flowers will benefit pollinators, but it works equally well creeping along the front of a border, in gravel gardens or inserted between pavers. It associates very nicely with ornamental grasses, and it’s fun to allow some plants to seed about and colonise small cracks in paths, walls and steps. Height and Spread: 30cm-50cm (12-20in).
