Hellebores are one of the first flowers to welcome a New Year in the garden. The Christmas Rose is perfect for shady borders, and can provide easy-maintenance ground cover beneath trees and shrubs.

Hellebores have glorious, nodding, cup-shaped flowers in a rainbow of clear colours. Hellebore 'Single Burgundy' carries blooms in a deep, husky red shade. The Hellebore is unrivalled for winter colour in the garden; these evergreen plants are clump-forming and look fantastic in long, sweeping borders or large patio pots. Height and spread: 45cm (18").

Flowering Months
Mulch hellebore plants with well rotted manure or garden compost each spring. Hellebores resent disturbance after planting and may take some time to re-establish. However when clumps become overcrowded, lifting and dividing of hellebores should be undertaken immediately after flowering. Caution: Hellebore sap may irritate the skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
Grow hellebores in neutral or alkaline soil, in dappled shade. Hellebores prefer a moist, humus rich, fertile soil that does not dry out in summer or sit waterlogged in winter. When growing hellebores on heavy clay or free draining gravel soils, add plenty of well rotted leaf mould or other organic matter to the soil prior to planting.
