The Kew Flowerhouse range of seeds from Thompson and Morgan has been specially created alongside the experts at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, to bring the beauty of the garden inside. This outstanding range of handpicked seeds are perfect for enjoying in the garden or in the home. This range includes show-stopping flowers and elegant floral fillers ideal for a bouquet.

Eryngium leavenworthii is a lesser-known annual variety which deserves to be more widely grown. Its annual life cycle means that it is a prolific flowerer, producing masses of spiky bracts in a stunning metallic violet, earning it the common name of ‘Purple Pineapple’. It’s known for attracting masses of bees and butterflies and makes an excellent subject for a dry and sunny Mediterranean border where it looks fabulous with yellow Achilleas. Allow some plants to self-sow to create random drifts through borders. Height 50-90cm (20-36in).

Sowing

Sow February to April or September for overwintering. Sow seed on the surface of a good, free-draining, damp, seed compost and cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Seal container inside a polythene bag or place in a propagator at 18-21C (65-70F) until after germination which usually takes 5-10 days. Do not exclude light as this helps germination.

Transplant when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Gradually acclimatise plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost, 45cm (18in) apart. Overwinter September sowings in a coldframe and plant out the following spring.

Grow in full sun in freely draining soil. Keep plants well watered until established.
