Description

Dahlia ‘Purple Fox’ is a perfectly formed, 8-10cm pompom of vivid magenta. Bred in the Netherlands by the innovative Verwer Dahlias, the Fox series have become renowned for producing masses of flowers on long stems held well above the foliage. As a result it’s become a favorite with florists and cut flower enthusiasts but it’s also an excellent all-rounder, looking entirely at home in a mixed border and making a fabulous container specimen. One of the smaller flowered varieties, it is extremely free-flowering, producing an abundance of weather-resistant blooms from midsummer until autumn. Height: 60cm -90cm (24-36in). Spread: 50cm (20”).

How to Grow
Plant Dahlia tubers outdoors in April after all risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny position in moist well drained soil. Prepare the soil by digging in plenty of well rotted manure or compost. Plant tubers at a depth of 15cm (6") and water well. Alternatively, start tubers into growth in pots of compost in a frost free greenhouse. Transplant them into their final positions outdoors in June.

Feed and water dahlias regularly throughout the growing season. While dahlia plants are still young, pinch out the growing tip of each stem to encourage bushier growth and masses of flowers. Deadhead faded dahlia flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. Bedding dahlia are generally grown as annuals, however dahlia tubers may be lifted in autumn and stored over winter in trays of peat or sand, in a cool but frost free position if required. They can be potted up the following spring.
