Description
Thompson & Morgan's plant breeders have got their paintbrushes out again, painstakingly hand pollinating flowers in the dahlia glasshouse to create a near jet-black variety! The dark velvety blooms appear black until the sun settles on them, revealing a deep maroon shimmer, further enhanced by a vibrant yellow centre. Set these short and stocky plants at the front of the border for a floral display right though to autumn. Set them in stylish containers for a contemporary floral display on the patio. Height and Spread: 35cm (14").

Culinary note: All dahlia flowers and tubers are edible. The flavours and textures can vary greatly depending on the soil and conditions in which they were grown. Flavours range from water chestnut through to a spicy apple or even carrot. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Sowing

Sow Dahlia seeds indoors from February to April on the surface of a good, free draining compost and lightly cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 20-25C (68-77F) or seal inside a clear polythene bag until germination which takes 7 - 21 days. Keep the compost damp but not wet and do not exclude light as this helps germination.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3") pots and grow Dahlia plants on in cooler conditions. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions over 7 – 10 days before planting outdoors. Plant Dahlias at a distance of 30cm (12") apart on any fertile, well drained soil in full sun.

More Info
Feed and water dahlias regularly throughout the growing season. While plants are still young, pinch out the growing tip of each stem to encourage bushier growth and masses of flowers. Deadhead faded dahlia flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced.
