Description

A richly coloured Azalea that makes a fiery spectacle, especially when the flowers are backlit. In May and June, the large, trumpet-shaped flowers emerge from pinkish buds, opening into orange-red flowers. The deciduous foliage offers a second season of interest in the autumn when it transitions to yellow.

Azalea ‘Golden Eagle’ is a medium-sized shrub that demands little care, providing multiple seasons of interest in small garden borders with acidic soil or containers filled with ericaceous compost. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Height: 2.5m (8.2ft). Spread: 1.5m (5ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Azaleas in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many azaleas can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Azalea plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Azaleas are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply.
More Info
Water Azalea plants regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Azaleas in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Azaleas will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot.
