Description

Attract a profusion of butterflies to your garden with the nectar rich blooms of Asclepias. This showy hardy perennial makes a fine choice for cottage garden borders and wildlife areas, offering a long season of interest from July right through to autumn. As the flowers fade, they are replaced by curious seed heads that make an intriguing addition to dried flower displays. Asclepias enjoy a moist, fertile soil, but shows surprising tolerance to dry conditions once established. Height: 90cm (36"). Spread: 60cm (24").

  • Collection comprises:
  • Asclepias tuberosa - Showy and ostentatious, the upright stems are topped with clusters of golden-orange blooms.
  • Asclepias incarnata 'Cinderella' - Upright stems are cloaked in elegant, slender foliage and topped with particularly dense clusters of pink blooms.
  • Asclepias incarnata 'Ice Ballet' - Dense clusters of pristine white blooms, from mid-summer to autumn.
  • Asclepias incarnata 'Soulmate' - A profusion of deep-pink flowers with delicate white centres, and a light vanilla fragrance.

How to Grow
Plant bareroots at the earliest opportunity following delivery. Grow butterfly weed plants in any fertile, well drained soil in full sun. Once established, Asclepias plants are reasonably drought tolerant and will survive well during dry conditions.
More Info
Water young plants regularly until they are fully established. Deadhead the first flush of blooms when they fade to promote a second flush of vibrant butterfly weed flowers. Leave the faded flower heads of any subsequent blooms intact at the end of summer to enjoy an attractive autumn seed head display. When the first frosts blacken the stems, cut them down to ground level. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of Asclepias in spring.
