It really is possible to grow your own crop of fresh peanuts in the UK! They will even produce a good crop of 'monkey nuts' in a sunny border, given a long hot spell. For best results we recommend growing in 45cm (18in) pots or patio bags, in a garden hot spot, or in a warm greenhouse. Start early to give your plants a long season (ideally 120 days from sprouting to cropping).In ideal conditions expect to get up to 40 nuts per plant. You'll also enjoy the pretty pea-like flowers that appear early on in the crop. Simply let the plants die down at the end of the season and lift the underground pods for drying. An excellent snack for storing and enjoying through the winter months. Height: 45cm (18in). Spread: 60cm (24in).

Sowing

Sow February to March or June to September. Sow seed on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays. Cover with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Seal container inside a polythene bag and keep at a temperature of between 15-20C (59-68F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination will usually take 14-21 days. Take care not to provide too high a temperature, as this can prevent germination.

When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise young plants to outdoor conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost, 23cm (9in) apart, or plant into baskets and containers.

How to Grow

Transplant seedlings into pots of multipurpose compost for planting out after the last frost. Greenhouse plants can be set into larger tubs for growing to harvest.
