Description
Native to Northern Iran, this superb tree is grown for its late-winter flowers and glorious autumn foliage. Closely related to the Witch Hazel (Hamamelis), Persian Ironwood starts flowering in late winter, producing clusters of small spider-like, crimson flowers. These are followed by glossy, rich green leaves, which in the autumn transform to stunning, vibrant shades of yellow, orange, red and purple. On mature trees, the peeling bark creates a mottled effect most appreciated in winter once the leaves have fallen. As the common name suggests, Parrotia persica is a tough, low-maintenance plant, growing well in almost any soil. Having an unusual spreading habit this tree as best grown as a specimen tree or as part of a woodland garden, with plenty of space to grow. Height: 8m (26’). Spread: 10m (33’).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Gradually acclimatise Persian Ironwood trees to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days. Plant Parrotia persica in any moist, fertile, well-drained soil; it will grow happily in improved clay soils. Incorporate plenty of compost or well-rotted manure prior to planting. Choose a final position in full sun or partial shade.
More Info
Feed and water Parrotia trees regularly until fully established. Once established, Parrotia persica requires little attention except for the occasional removal of damaged, diseased and misplaced shoots in late winter or early spring. Exposed flower buds may be damaged by hard frosts.
