An excellent and rarely-seen climber for a shady wall providing all-year interest and cover with its leathery, evergreen foliage plus a long season of lace-cap white flowers. Hydrangea seemannii carries large, lance-shaped evergreen leaves that form a backdrop to domed lace-cap flower heads composed of greenish-white, fertile flowers surrounded by white bracts. It boasts a long flowering period, blooming from June to August and occasionally beyond if the weather is mild.
Hydrangea seemannii is a woody, self-supporting climber equipped with aerial roots that will cling to walls and fences or ramble over trellis and requires minimal maintenance other than occasional trimming. A versatile climber, it copes with everything from full sun to deep shade given a sheltered, free-draining position. A rewarding climber for a sheltered courtyard or cottage garden where it can be allowed to scramble informally up a wall or over an arbour. Maximum height: 8–12m (39ft). Maximum spread: 2.5–4m (13ft).
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

Hydrangea seemannii will grow in full shade, part shade or full sun, with shelter from cold, drying winds and hard frosts. Grow in any rich fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Grow against walls and fences where it will cling and support itself via aerial roots.

Water regularly until plants are fully established. After flowering, trim back perimeter shoots to fit the available space if required but avoid excessive pruning of lateral shoots from the face as this is where the flowers are produced. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: Contact with hydrangea foliage may irritate the skin and eyes and all parts are harmful if eaten.
