Description

Salad Burnet can be used in salads and added to cooling drinks in a similar way to Borage. The leaves of this unusual hardy perennial herb have a delicate cucumber flavour and in many recipes are interchangeable with mint. Use the young leaves regularly as they become increasing bitter with maturity. Height: 45cm (18"). Spread: 40cm (16").

Sowing
Direct sow Salad Burnet seed outdoors from March to May. Grow Salad Burnet in a well prepared, moist, seedbed in full sun or partial shade. Sow seeds thinly at a depth of 1cm (½in) in drills 30cm apart. When seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them to 23cm (9in) apart. Fortnightly sowings will ensure an ongoing supply of young Burnet leaves for adding to salads.
More Info
Water Salad Burnet during dry periods to ensure that the soil remains moist. Burnet leaves can be harvested 6-8 weeks after sowing, by selecting a few leaves from each plant. Salad Burnet is best harvested regularly and while the leaves are small, as older, larger leaves become increasingly bitter.
