Phyllostachys aurea is a fully hardy, evergreen, strong-growing bamboo that holds a prestigious RHS AGM. It produces mid-green, hollow, grooved, canes, which turn to a caramel-brown colour on maturity. Slender, lance shaped golden-green leaves decorate the stems all year round. Although it naturally spreads via undergroound rhizhomes, Fish-pole Bamboo tends to behave more like a clump formng variety in cooler climates, making it easy to manage and maintain. Height: 8m (26'). Width: 4m (13').

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
When growing Fish-pole Bamboo in pots, choose a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Repot the plant, firming well into the new container, then water well and position in full sun or semi shade. Alternatively plant Fish-pole Bamboos directly into borders in any moist, free draining soil. Bamboos dislike poor, dry soils. If your soil is particularly free draining, improve it by adding plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost prior to planting. Choose a sheltered position that is protected from cold, drying winds. Phyllostachys aurea spreads via underground rhizomes so is best given space to grow. Alternatively surround the roots with a barrier to restrict the plant’s spread.
More Info
Feed and water bamboo plants regularly, particularly when grown in containers. Repot into successively larger containers as plants increase in size. Once bamboo plants are established, thin out any weak, damaged or unwanted canes in spring, cutting them back to ground level, and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Mature bamboos can be divided in spring if clumps become congested.
