Also known as ‘Lady Fern’, Athyrium filix-femina is a UK native, deciduous fern with much more refined looks than the commoner ‘Male Fern’. It has been recognised with an RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Fresh green crosiers unfurl into lacy, ladder-like foliage held gracefully in horizontal tiers. This elegant fern prefers acidic soils but adapts to a wide range of conditions in damp, shady areas. Plant Athyrium filix-femina in bold drifts through woodland-type borders where it makes excellent ground cover. Its elegant, yellow-green foliage is perfect for creating exciting contrasts with colour and texture. Try it alongside grassy Carex and Hakonechloa or the rounded leaves of Hostas or Brunnera. Height and spread: 60cm (24in)

How to Grow
Plant Athyrium in partial shade in fertile, moist, acid or neutral, soil. Athyrium ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter so add some well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting.

Feed and water ferns regularly until they are fully established. Leave old fronds on over winter to protect the crown. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost around each plant in spring.
