Description

You can still enjoy freshly picked leaves for salad and stir fries well into late autumn. If you have a greenhouse you can grow our winter cropping mix under cover for even later harvests! These leafy varieties are quick and easy to grow, and won’t take up much space on the vegetable plot.

Winter Cropping Veg Mix comprises 11 plugs each of:

  • Swiss Chard - Swiss Chard can be harvested at different stages of maturity from mid-summer to late autumn. If soils aren’t excessively wet overwinter, it will re-emerge to give an unbelievably early spring crop!
  • Winter Mix Salad Leaves – A hardy mix of salad leaves which continue to crop well into late autumn, and early winter if grown in the greenhouse.

22 plug plants (KB9751)

How to Grow

Pot up and grow plugs plants on in warm conditions until all risk of frost has passed and plants are large enough to be transplanted outside. Gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 - 10 days before transplanting into moist, rich, well drained soil in full sun. Plant at a distance of 30cm (12") apart and cover with a protective netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. For even later crops, plant them in the greenhouse.

More Info

Water regularly particularly during dry periods to avoid bolting. Feed throughout the growing season with a high nitrogen feed. Hoe between plants regularly to prevent weeds from establishing and bring insect larvae to the surface.

Leaves can be harvested as a ‘cut and come again’ crop throughout the growing season by cutting leaves 2.5cm (1") above soil level with a sharp knife or scissors. Alternatively allow chard to develop into larger leaves which can be enjoyed as a steamed vegetable.
