Description
This RHS AGM radish has really impressed us in both field trials and taste tests. If you like an ornamental quality to the veg patch, or grow for the show bench, you'll appreciate the neat leafy tops and uniform bright red roots of Radish Mars F1. More importantly you'll love this mild tasting radish for its crisp, juicy texture and visual appeal on the plate. Mars F1 offers a slightly thicker damage-free skin, strong enough to withstand harvesting, washing and preparation without detracting from taste or texture.

Indeed Mars F1 is top for texture! Other radishes soon turn pithy but not Radish Mars F1, meaning you can leaves roots in the ground twice as long as other varieties, giving you the longest harvesting window possible. This vigorous radish is easy to grow outdoors and can be sown under glass or on windowsills for early crops. Height: 15cm (6"). Spread: 10cm (4").

Companion planting: Try growing radishes with mint to deter flea beetles, which chew irregular holes in the leaves.

Sowing
Radishes grow well in most soils, but prefer rich, moist free draining soils. Sow seeds at regular intervals from early spring to early summer in well cultivated soil. Sow seeds very thinly 1cm (0.5in) deep in drills 15cm (6in) apart.

Thin out the seedlings to 3-5cm apart.

More Info
When growing radishes, prevent them running to seed by keeping plants cool and well watered, particularly during hot, dry periods. Excessive watering should also be avoided as this will encourage radish leaf growth instead of root development. Harvest radishes 3 to 4 weeks after sowing when roots reach a reasonable size. Delayed harvesting may result in hot, pithy roots.
