A popular shrub for hedging and security, Firethorn as a fast growing deciduous plant that also looks attractive all year round. This hardy evergreen shrub naturally forms a rounded shape that requires very little maintenance other than an occasional prune. Pyracantha coccinea 'Red Cushion' is covered in clusters of small white flowers in spring which are delicately scented. These blooms develop into berries which ripen to a bright red by late summer or early autumn, virtually covering the whole shrub, a firm favourite of birds, so a great way of attracting wildlife. Flowering Months
Feed and water Pyracantha plants regularly until full established. Prune free standing shrubs in early spring, removing damaged and poorly positioned shoots. For wall trained shrubs, tie in main shoots to form part of the permanent framework, and cut back unwanted shoots to the main stem. After flowering in summer, shorten the remaining stems to 3 leaves from the base, in order to expose the developing berries. Remove any old fruit trusses in spring to make room for new growth.
Grow Pyracantha plants as free standing shrubs or trained against a walls and fences. Plant Pyracantha in any well drained, reliably moist soil in sun or semi shade. Choose a position with shelter from cold, drying winds.
