Description
Through sales generated from the National Trust seeds, a minimum of £7,500 will be given to the National Trust to help look after nature, beauty and history for everyone, forever.

Flattened, lacy umbels of dazzling white flowers appear in early summer and persist through to autumn. Orlaya grandiflora is of Mediterranean origins, flourishing in grassy meadows and olive groves. This easy-going, hardy annual is perfect for creating a natural feel in sunny borders, reminiscent of wild cow parsley, but far more refined! It makes a charming cut flower and provides valuable nectar for pollinating insects. Perfect for twining through borders in loose drifts, or sprinkling among slender grasses. Height: 75cm (30"). Spread: 50cm (20").

Sowing

Sow Orlaya in trays indoors from March to May. Sow seed on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost and cover with a very light sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 15-20C (59-68F) or seal it inside a polythene bag. Keep the soil damp but not wet. Do not exclude light as this aids germination which usually takes 21 to 30 days.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7cm (3") pots and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When Orlaya plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Transplant outdoors in full sun in any moist, well drained soil at a distance of 30cm (12") apart.

Alternatively, direct sow Orlaya seeds outdoors where they are to grow from August to September, for flowers in the following year. Choose a position in full sun on well drained soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Sow seeds thinly, at a depth of 3mm (&frac;1/8"). Water the ground regularly, especially during dry periods. When seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to 30cm (12") apart.

More Info
Water regularly until plants are fully established. Allow Orlaya plants to self-seed for new plants in the following year. If seedlings are not required, deadhead the faded flowers regularly.
