Flowering Months

Feed and water oriental lily bulbs regularly throughout the growing season, keeping them moist at all times. Deadhead faded blooms at the base of the flower where they join the stem to prevent the development of seed pods. When cutting oriental lily flowers for indoor arrangements, it is important to leave a third of the stem intact in order to feed the bulb for the following year.

After flowering leave the stems intact until they begin to yellow in autumn. Reduce watering and move containers of lilies to a cool, frost free position over winter. Lilies grown in borders can be lifted, cleaned and stored for the winter, however in mild areas most lilies should survive outdoors provided that the soil is not too wet. A mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost should be applied in spring. Divide and repot container grown lilies into fresh compost every other year.

Caution: All parts of lilies are toxic to cats.
Oriental lilies prefer a moist, free draining, neutral to acid soil that is rich in organic matter. Prior to planting, add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil to give your lilies the best start. When growing lilies in containers, use a loam based compost such as John Innes No.2. Lily bulbs should be planted at a depth of approximately 3 times their own height and 15cm (6") apart. Planting deeply helps to protect the bulb during particularly hot periods. Choose a sheltered, sunny position where lilies will grow with their heads in the sun and their roots in the shade.

They keep on going! 2013-11-07

I ordered a lucky-dip of some of these last summer, forgetting that I'd be out of the country for three months. A quick call home and my mum kept a look-out for the delivery. She planted them up in the garden and in numerous pots (there were loads of bulbs) and sent me photos of the beautiful display they put on. When I returned home, they were almost finished flowering so I fed them up with tomato feed and left the pots to over-winter in the garage. All pots have plants with even more buds on than last year - one kept in our friend's conservatory has already flowered and the others outside are just opening this week. The fragrance in the evening is wonderful. Even the plants overwintered in the garden (forgot to lift them) are looking strong, but are blind this year; I'll feed them up more this summer, leave them in and see what happens next year!

Good condition 2012-04-24

This was my first time ordering bulb flowers from Thompson and Morgan, when I received the bulb, it was in good condition. I planted it straight away, and the stalks have since appeared from the soil. The instructions are very clear and they have dispatched the plant earlier than stated on the website. Am very pleased with the purchase. I will continue to order plants from this website. I have just received my strawberry plant, can't wait for them to grow!!!
