Description

Mophead hydrangeas are fabulous shrubs for partial shade, their soft, pillowy flower heads lifting dingy areas with bold blocks of colour. They’re perfect for shady containers, woodland areas or underplanting beneath a light tree canopy.

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Blue' produces strong stems clothed in bright green, toothed leaves and bright blue flower heads from June to September. As with all macrophyllas varieties, an alkaline soil will produce more red-purple shades. Grow this variety in acid borders or containers of ericaceous soil to maintain the best blue colour.

The skeletal seedheads persist long after the flowers have faded, providing continuous interest right through to winter. Height: 2m (6.5ft). Spread: 2.5m (8.2ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Hydrangea macrophylla prefers a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Alternatively plant hydrangea macrophylla in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
More Info
Water regularly until plants are fully established. Leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds swell in spring to protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune after flowering, reducing the stems to restrict their growth to the available space and to improve the shape of the plant. After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: Contact with hydrangea foliage may irritate the skin and eyes and all parts are harmful if eaten.
