Description
An easy care mix, producing unusual pineapple blooms each year with minimal maintenance. Enjoy a selection of foliage and flower colours from this architectural mix. These hardy perennials will form into bulbs 3 or 4 years after sowing, thriving in sunny borders or patio pots. Avoid planting in soils that sit wet in winter. Height: 60cm (24in). Spread: 30cm (12in).

1 packet (50 eucomis seeds) (32492)

Sowing

Sow seed at any time of the year in pots or trays of moist seed compost, and cover with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator at a temperature of 20-25C (68-77F) or seal inside a polythene bag. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged. Do not exclude light as this helps germination, which usually takes 14-30 days. Once germinated, remove from propagator and grow seedlings on in cooler conditions.

When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3”) pots and grow on until plants are well-established. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost in a light, well-drained soil in full sun.

More Info
Feed and water regularly in the growing season. Eucomis is borderline hardy and will appreciate some winter protection. Apply a dry mulch to borders and move containers to a sheltered position or cold greenhouse.
