Perfect for beginner growers and experienced gardeners alike, these reliable varieties are easy to germinate and grow to maturity, delivering colourful blooms and bountiful crops with every packet you sow.

A superb mix that has been developed with florists in mind! Dianthus caryophyllus 'Giant Chabaud Mixed' produces beautifully fragrant, fringed and double flowers in a spectacular colour mix. The long stems make them ideal for cutting for summer bouquets. Although perennial, they are best grown as annuals to brighten up borders and containers. These cottage garden favourites are loved by bees and butterflies too! Height: 60cm (24”). Spread: 40cm (16”).

Culinary note: Use the clove like tasting petals for adding to cakes, either for flavour or decorating, suitable for soups, salads and sauces too. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Sowing

Sow Dianthus seeds indoors from February to April on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays and cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag and keep at a temperature of between 18-20C (64-68F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination usually takes 14 - 30 days.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3”) pots and grow Dianthus plants on in cooler conditions. Gradually acclimatise pinks to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost. Plant Dianthus at a distance of 23cm (9”) apart on any fertile, well drained soil in full sun.

More Info

Feed and water Dianthus plants regularly until they are fully established. Deadhead faded Dianthus flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced throughout the summer.
