Description
Cardiospermum halicacabum is actually a climbing perennial, but generally grown as a half hardy annual in the UK. Its delicate climbing stems bear finely cut foliage and tiny white flowers in summer. As the flowers fade, a profusion of papery seedpods with a curious balloon-like structure take their place. Within the seedpods, each round, black seed is painted with a white heart. This unusual plant makes an intriguing climber for twining over a willow obelisk or scrambling through shrubs. Perfect for cottage garden borders or as a talking point on the patio or in the conservatory. Height: 3m (10’). Spread: 50cm (20").

Sowing

Sow Cardiospermum seed indoors from March to May. Use a good seed compost, just covering the seed with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite. Germination takes 21-30 days at 18-20C (64-68F). Seal in a polythene bag after sowing and do not exclude light.

When large enough to handle, transplant the seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots, and grow them on in cooler conditions. When all risk of frost has passed and plants are well grown, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions or 7 -10 days before planting out in their final positions.

Plant Cardiospermum in any moist, well-drained soil in sun or semi-shade. Cardiospermum will require support for its twining stems.

More Info
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season. Cardiospermum will require support for its twining stems. It is best grown as a half-hardy annual, but may be overwintered in a warm greenhouse or conservatory if required.
