Description

The dark, velvety leaves of Calathea crocata reveal tantalising glimpses of their claret undersides as they gently unfurl. This tropical stunner makes a handsome house plant even before its bright saffron-yellow flowers appear. The blooms are borne above the leaves on short, upright stems, making a striking contrast.

Like all Calatheas, this leafy perennial enjoys bright, filtered light, well away from the scorch of direct sun. This spectacular house plant makes a superb focal point, whether grown alone, or as part of an exotic group planting in the conservatory. Height and spread: 50cm (20").

1 x 14cm potted calathea plant (KB4550)
1 x 14cm potted calathea plant and 1 x large black/ gold ceramic pot (KB6297)

How to Grow
Position Calathea in a warm room away from cold draughts and radiators, with a constant temperature above 16C (60F). Average room temperatures of 18C (65F) - 24C (75F) are preferable. Calathea require a bright but lightly shaded spot, well away from the direct glare of the sun.
More Info
Water Calathea freely between spring and autumn using tepid rainwater where possible, and allowing the pot to drain well after each watering. In winter, reduce watering but do not allow the compost to completely dry out. House plants should be fed regularly between March and September when they are in active growth. Calathea appreciates a humid atmosphere - stand it on a tray filled with pebbles and water. As the water evaporates it will increase humidity around the plant.
