The delicate palette of Alstroemeria ‘Avanti’ makes it perfectly suited to blending into mixed borders. The funnel-shaped flowers feature white petals kissed with pink in the centre paired with a yellow, speckled throat. For sheer flower power, there’s little to rival Alstroemerias – their ability to pump out blooms from early summer to the first frosts without ever exhausting themselves is nothing less than extraordinary. Their exquisite, exotic blooms not only deliver a fantastic performance in borders but make wonderful, long-lasting cut flowers too. Height: 60cm-80cm (24in). Spread: 40cm (16in).

Pot up Alstroemeria plants and grow them on in frost free conditions until large enough to plant outdoors and all risk of frost has passed. Alstroemerias perform best in a sunny, sheltered spot in a rich, free-draining soil that contains lots of organic matter. A weekly feed with a high-potassium feed such as tomato food will encourage prolific blooming, while removing each stem after the flowers have faded will prolong the flowering season. Tall stems may benefit from staking or support to prevent wind damage. Will survive temperatures down to around minus 5c but not much lower. Apply an autumn mulch if in a border, or if in a container, move to a frost-free spot over winter.
More Info Throughout the growing season, water Peruvian lilies regularly and feed container grown plants each month. When picking alstroemeria pluck the flowers rather than cutting as plucking stimulates the rhizome encourage further growth. In autumn, cut back the old Alstroemeria flower stems and apply a dry mulch of chipped bark or straw to the base of the plant to protect it from cold winter weather. Alstroemeria prefers to be left undisturbed but can be divided in autumn or spring if clumps become overcrowded. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes.
