Abies concolor has the potential to reach very large proportions – up to 50m in its native home of the south-west United States. In the UK, it will make less height, but still remains a sizable tree. This conical species is stiffly upright, with branches held at 90 degrees to the trunk. The slender, blue-grey needles make this a particularly eye-catching species. Cones appear in autumn, varying from pale green to brown with maturity. This spectacular conifer makes a fine, evergreen, specimen tree where space allows, or can be planted in rows as an evergreen screen. Height: Up to 30m (98’). Spread: 8m (26’).

How to Grow
Grow Abies in reliably moist, fertile, neutral to slightly acid, well drained soil. Choose a position in full sun. A sheltered site with even light is preferable to ensure even growth and retain its elegant shape. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil to improve its structure and fertility.
More Info
In the first few years after planting, water Fir trees regularly, particularly during dry periods until they are fully established. Abies will naturally form an elegant conical shaped tree. No pruning is required.
