Parsnip and carrot seeds

Little beats the taste of a freshly pulled carrot or dug parsnip. With our carrot seeds, you can be eating homegrown roots from early spring with ‘Amsterdam Forcing’ and ‘Adelaide’ to late maturing varieties, such as ‘Volcano’ that can be harvested in winter. Growing parsnip seeds means you can harvest before roots get old and woody, giving you the sweetest crop. If you don’t find the answers to your questions below, please read our helpful guides on growing carrots and how to grow parsnips.

What month is best to plant parsnip and carrot seeds?

It’s best to wait until the ground has warmed up to plant parsnip seed, or put a cloche over it for a few weeks before sowing. Aim for between April and June. Carrot seeds can be sown from early spring to late August, depending on the variety.

Should I soak parsnip seeds before planting?

Parsnip seeds are very slow to germinate so soaking them overnight can speed this up. If you sow direct, keep the drill well-watered until germination.

How do you stop carrot root fly attack?

Grow resistant varieties such as ‘Flyaway’ and ‘Resistafly’. Protect plants with horticultural fleece and thin plants in the evenings when flies are less active, as they are attracted by the carrot smell.

Can you grow carrots in a container?

Carrots are ideal for growing in containers and a good method if your soil is heavy. Make sure you use a deep container for long roots, or choose small carrots, such as ‘Paris Market’ or ‘Caracas’ for shallower pots.
