Passion Flower Collection

Passiflora

Hardy Perennial

These lavish evergreen climbers bear an abundance of exotic, perfumed blooms. The beautiful passion flowers are followed by inedible orange passion fruits that make a spectacular feature in late summer. Vigorous and easy to grow, these tropical climbers are always rewarding for their sheer flower power.

    The collection comprises of:
  • Passiflora 'Alata' - A pretty, scented bloom, with a red outer and a purple and white centre. Alata will flower freely from spring right through to Autumn.
  • Passiflora edulis 'Frederick' - Passiflora edulis is a fast growing evergreen climber, potentially reaching 9m (29ft). The unusual, wispy fronds on the white and purple blooms - which will cover his plant from late spring onwards - will later produce yellow/orange fruit in the autumn.
  • Passiflora violacea 'Victoria' - A vigourous plant with stunning violet flowers which are large than most other Passion Flowers.

Height: 8m (26'). Spread: 2m (6.5')

Culinary note: The fruits of passiflora are edible, albeit somewhat unremarkable in taste. They can be used in preserves and desserts. P. edulis, grown under glass will produce the best fruit for eating. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Pot up passion flower plants and grow them on in warm frost-free conditions with a minimum temperature of 5°C (41°F). When plants are well grown, transplant them into their final positions in a warm conservatory, heated greenhouse, or patio container that can be kept frost-free position during winter. When growing Passion Flower ‘Perfume Passion' in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train plants onto a suitable support such as trellis or a freestanding climbing frame.
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season. Prune passion flowers in spring, removing the oldest stems first, and reducing the remaining stems to restrict their growth to the space available.
